XVIII International Summer School for students, postgraduates and young
scientists "MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOMEDICINE"
In the period from May 22 to July 14, 2023, on the basis of the Mechnikov Odesa National University, Department of Microbiology, Virology and Biotechnology the XVIII International Summer School "MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOMEDICINE" for students, postgraduates and young scientists was held online. This event became a platform for scientific exchange and interaction of young researchers from different countries.
In the period from May 22 to 26, 2023, a laboratory course "Cloning, expression and purification of proteins" for Mechnikov Odesa National University students of the 3rd-4th year of education was held. The classes were held under the supervision of Andriy Merlich, PhD, and Nadia Korotaeva, PhD, from ONU, and with the support of leading scientists Oleksiy Schmidt, PhD, and Olena Rakhimova, PhD, from the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics of Umeå University, Sweden. Participants gained practical skills in plasmid DNA isolation, vector ligation and bacterial transformation, as well as protein purification. All participants received certificates of participation.
As a part of the XVIII International Summer School, on June 27-28, 2023, a methodical online seminar dedicated to remote teaching of medical biodisciplines «Scientific and methodical seminar on digitalization of the educational process" was held. The moderators of the event were Oksana Zinchenko, PhD, and Anna Yamborko, PhD, from ONU. The workshop covered the use of digital learning tools, online testing platforms and virtual learning resources, overcoming the challenges of war during distance learning. The participants exchanged their experience in the development of methodological materials for classes, the recipients vision of their content, design and purpose.
On June 29-30, an online conference of young scientists "Modern problems of biology, biotechnology and biomedicine" was held as part of the Summer School, moderated by Olena Saschuk, PhD, ONU. As a result, the conference materials were published, and the best papers were recommended for publication in the scientific journal "Microbiology and Biotechnology".
From July 3 to 14, an online lecture course was held, which included 40 lectures from 36 lecturers and attracted almost 250 listeners on the Zoom platform.
The lecture course covered various aspects of biotechnology, molecular biology and biomedicine, with presentations by leading scientists from various countries. Topics included issues of advances in biotechnology, bacterial and phage genomics, plasmid and vector genomics, miRNA, mass spectrometry, antifungal properties of lactobacilli, phage therapy, virus-like particles in medicine, modern and historical uses of yeast, cancer vaccines, modern views on the evolution of microorganisms and infectious diseases, next-generation sequencing and cloning techniques, drug discovery, biomineralization, metagenomics, metabolomics and bioinformatics, electron microscopy, statistics, and phylogenetic analysis.
Leading scientists from Ukraine, France, England, Germany, Finland, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Canada, and the United States gave reports on the modern achievements of biology and biotechnology, in particular from the Palladin Institute of Biochemistry, NASU, Kharkiv Karazin National University (Ukraine), Institute of Biology and Medicine of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University (Ukraine), Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of NAS of Ukraine, D.K. Zabolotny National Academy of Sciences, Scientific Center, LLC "YURiA FARM" (Kyiv, Ukraine), Dnipro State Medical University (Ukraine), Adam Mickiewicz University (Poland), EMBO, Academia Europea (Poland), University of Leuven, Belgium (Belgium), Vésale Bioscience (Belgium), Institute Germans Trias I Pujol, Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain), University of Southampton (UK) The Institute of Cancer Research (UK ), London institute of Medical Sciences (UK), Biotechnologie Research Center (Canada), University of Maryland - Baltimore (USA), University of Nebraska-Lincoln (USA), Onego Bio, Helsinki (Finland), Hannover Medical School, Hannover (Germany), German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg (Germany), University of Nantes (France), Umea University (Sweden).
The lecture course students had the opportunity to express their opinions during discussions, as well as to ask relevant questions, to which they received qualified answers and support. The lecture course brought together young scientists and postgraduate students from many universities and scientific institutions of Ukraine, Germany, Spain, Poland, France, Portugal, Bangladesh, Georgia, Egypt, India, Moldova, Nigeria, Turkey, the Philippines, Sweden and Slovakia, creating a unique platform for sharing knowledge and ideas in the field of molecular biology, biotechnology and biomedicine.
In general, the XVIII International Summer School is not only an educational event, but also a catalyst for the scientific growth of young researchers. It contributes to the creation of a global community of scientists actively cooperating in the development of modern scientific areas, in particular in molecular biology, biotechnology and biomedicine.
